Most people are aware of the consolidation of the media industry. However, people are only dimly aware of TV’s inhibition of left brain functioning. Try this experiment. Right now. Critically review three of the news stories you watched on TV last night. Ready. Set. Go! So, only a few perspectives are presented on the TV news, and when viewers like yourself watch this news, they are inhibited from logically analyzing the stories. That is terrible news for democracy. Democracy needs informed citizens that can analyze and discuss different views of a situation. I use a few simple guidelines to get a picture of what is going on in the world. These do require a little more effort than parking in front of a TV set and mindlessly absorbing the images, but not too much more. Reading is more efficient The first step is to start reading, instead of watching, your news. Television generally takes a lot of time to get across a little bit of information. With reading you can absorb information much faster. A five minute story on the news can be read online or in the newspaper generally in less than a minute. The spare time can be used to analyze the story. Get several quality news sources The next step in developing a good picture of the world is to get several good news sources. If you intend a long break, then you really should arrange for someone to attend to their needs if at allpossible. A good friend or neighbor will most likely be more than willing to oblige, especially if you offer to return the favor. Your plants should be fine though, if you are only going away for a few days or so. However if you have a situation where you simply cannot call on anybody to assist, or perhaps you do not want to impose on anybody, then I have outlined a few useful steps that you can take, particularly if you are intending to be absent for an extended time. Move all those plants that are summering outdoors back inside, but place them in a shaded area first. Do this during the week before you leave, so as to let them acclimatize to the change in conditions. Then bring them indoors, and place them in a spot where they will be most likely to get the benefit of indirect sunshine.In the morning before you depart, spread sheets of newspaper on the floor of the room where your plants are situated. Water all your plants thoroughly, (whether they need it or not), and then place them on the newspaper sheets. Place four large bowls of water around the plants, and cover them with a large white sheet. Make sure that the sheet drapes down beyond the plants onto the newspaper. This will help to keep your plants moist and healthy. Remember that the first priority is to have a fantastic vacation. By Bill Prudehome With fall on the way, it is time to consider planting bulb flowers that we want for spring blooming. Bulbs are one of the best flower investments for the cost, properly cared for they will provide spring color in your garden for years. The planting of hardy spring flowering bulbs is best accomplished in the fall months. You can plant most bulbs as long as the ground has not frozen. Soil Preparation As with most garden flowers it is important to prepare the soil correctly prior to planting. Making sure that the soil drains well is very important, as most bulbs are prone to rot if the soil is to wet. Soils that are high in clay can be adjusted by adding organic material such as peat moss or compost. Work the organic material into the soil to a minimum of 12 inches below the surface. Fertilizing Phosphorus should be mixed into the soil to enhance root development. Use a superphosphate or bonemeal mixed into the soil below the bulb, about 8 to 10 inches deep as this is the location of where the roots will be and where the fertilizer will be absorbed. Then apply a small layer of soil above the fertilized soil so that the bulb is not in direct contact with the fertilizer. Note: If you have small burrowing animals on your property, such as gophers or chipmunks use superphosphate as bonemeal will attract the animals to the bulbs. If you do not remove your bulbs after flowering then it is important to continue fertilization. For spring flowering bulbs - in the spring (as soon as the shoot is visible) and in the fall, for every ten square feet of garden, create a mixture of two cups of superphosphate combined with five tablespoons of 10-10-10 soluble fertilizer. To avoid bulb rot do not add fertilizer to bulbs once they have started to flower. For bulbs that flower in the summer and fall as soon as the plant is visible commence fertilizing monthly until the plants start to flower.
